Clever: Make Magic Happen

With so much learning having to move online in 2020, our explainer video for the platform Clever felt more timely than we could have anticipated.

All materials were fabricated and animated from our team’s living rooms and tied together in post. When we could no longer rely on in-person hand modeling shoots, we turned to internal staff as well as our friends at Mae B Films, who photographed their daughter’s hands in the same positions as we mapped them out in image sequences. Thanks to frame-by-frame animation and a lot of compositing magic, all of our remote hand models were able to fit right into the story.

Kudos to the teachers and families for figuring it all out, and to the team who turned an isolated situation into a collaborative one.

How We Created a Remote Modeling Shoot:

1. Take a series of photos for your remote hand model to mimic.

2. Shoot all of the objects separately, using green screen and rigs to make things move.

3. Bring in the photos that your hand model takes on green screen into post and composite them into each appropriate frame.

4. Mask out all wires and comp in imagery, tracking the motion along the way so that everything lines up.

5. Voila! You have a real person shoot, without real people.
